How it's made

Your photo, woven into the cloth

A jacquard loom builds your image out of coloured cotton thread at the same time as it weaves the cloth. The picture runs all the way through the blanket and becomes part of its structure. Printed blankets work the other way round, with ink laid onto finished fabric, which is why they wear.

  • It softens as you use it

Cotton breaks in the way a good shirt does. There is no ink on the surface to crack or fade, so the picture stays as clear as the day it arrived.

  • 100% cotton

Natural fibre all the way through. Polyester fleece sheds microplastics into the water every time you wash it. Cotton does not.

  • The back is the negative

The loom weaves both faces from the same threads, so the reverse comes out as a negative of your photo. Wherever a colour sits on the front, its opposite sits in that spot on the back. Fringed edges, and heavy enough to actually use.

What to expect

How the woven version differs

Your screen makes colour with light. A blanket makes it with dyed cotton thread, from a fixed set of yarn colours. Colours shift a little, contrast softens, and the picture takes on the texture of the cloth. Drag the slider to see it.

This is what gives a woven blanket its depth, and it is why one looks like an heirloom while a photo print looks like a photo print. We would rather show you now than have it surprise you when the parcel opens.

If we got it wrong, we will make it right

Every blanket is woven to order. As you upload, the designer looks at your photo and tells you if it is small for the size you have chosen, so you can swap it before you order. And if what arrives is wrong on our end, tell us within 30 days and we will weave you a new one.

This covers our workmanship: a weaving flaw, the wrong size, damage in transit. Choosing the photo is the part we leave to you. The designer flags a file that is small for the size, but contrast and fine detail are judgements only you can make about your own picture. Replacements are free and you keep the original, so there is nothing to send back. Because every blanket is made for one person, all sales are final and we do not issue refunds.

Questions

Common questions

Will it look exactly like it does on my screen?

Not quite, and that difference is worth understanding before you order. Your screen makes colour with light. A blanket makes it with dyed cotton yarn, from a fixed set of colours the loom works with. Colours shift slightly, contrast softens, and the picture takes on the texture of the cloth. There is a slider further up this page that shows you exactly what changes.

What is it made of?

100% cotton, woven on a jacquard loom in the USA, with a fringed edge. Natural fibre all the way through, so no polyester and no microplastics going into your wash water.

How long does it take?

About a week from order to doorstep. Each blanket is woven to order once your photo comes through, and shipping is free.

What photo should I use?

Whichever one means the most. Faces, pets, places and artwork all weave well. Larger files carry more detail, though plenty of our blankets have come from ordinary phone photos.

As you upload, the designer flags a file that is small for the size you have chosen. Resolution is only half of it, though: a photo with strong contrast and a clear subject weaves far better than a soft, flat or busy one, however large the file. Thread cannot add detail that is not already in the picture.

What does the back look like?

Your photo as a negative. The loom weaves both faces from the same set of threads, so any colour that shows on the front is replaced by its opposite on the back. Both sides carry the whole picture, so it is a genuinely two-sided blanket.

Can I wash it?

Yes. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. There is no ink on the surface to crack or fade, so cotton simply softens with each wash.

Do I need the rights to the photo?

Yes, please only upload photos you took or own. Professional portraits and wedding photos usually belong to the photographer. A quick message asking permission is normally all it takes.

What if I do not love it?

If we got it wrong, whether that is a weaving flaw, the wrong size or damage in transit, get in touch within 30 days and we will weave you a new one at our cost. You keep the original and there is nothing to send back. Because every blanket is made to order from your own photo, all sales are final and we do not issue refunds.

The photo itself is your call. The designer flags a file that is small for the size you have picked, and the woven preview shows you how it will turn out. Past that, contrast and fine detail are things only you can judge about your own picture, which is why we show you the preview twice before you order.
